Digital radiography has transformed the way clinicians acquire radiographs. It allows practitioners to access and share radiographs through digital devices. Clinicians can manipulate the image and improve diagnosis and treatment planning. However, the many marketed technologies and intraoral sensors come in variety of configurations. Practitioners need objective benchmarks to make an informed decision regarding the right sensor to be incorporated into the practice.

 

We’re skipping the philosophical debate to between digital sensors and photo-stimulable phosophor (PSP) plates. We’re interested in digital sensors as they provide less radiation dose than F-speed films and PSP by up to 75%, much better resolution, and significant time saving! However, if you look around you will see a lot of sensors on the market and every sales reps claiming their sensor is the best. That should not come surprising as these sensors are sold for thousands of dollars. It is a big industry and multi-million dollars business.

Over 8 months of tedious testing and countless hours calibrating, exposing, and tinkering with the sensors. The research will reveal information regarding image quality and physical properties of latest CMOS digital sensors on the market: Kodak RVG6100, Schick Elite, Dexis Platinum, Planmeca ProSensor, Imageworks EVA+, XDR E2V, Gendex GXS 700, and Sirona XIOS Plus sensor. Some of this information has never been released to the public before. We will go over line pairs, active area, bit depth, resolution, active to surface ratio, back scatter shield, physical dimensions…etc

Moved to the University of Michigan

UM Go Blue

It’s been a month since I moved to the University of Michigan. I will be working as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry.

 

Finally, I am getting settled-in in Ann Arbor. The school has a lot of resources both on the educational side and the technical side. We will work to get more exciting things done here. There are a couple of very interesting projects that we’ve been doing for some time. Keep you eyes open.

Cone Beam CT Course for DMD students

I had the opportunity to setup an elective course for CWRU School of Dental Medicine 4th year DMD students before they graduate this year in May.

 

The experience gained for this course was appreciated by many of the students who attended the course. The course covered basic principles of digital radiography including digital intraoral sensors, PSP receptors, digital image acquisition and manipulation. The second component of the course dealt with Cone Beam CT principles of action, differences between the machines on the market. Advantages and limitations of CBCT. Both components of the course included hands-on training sessions in the computer lab and the radiology clinic.

 

I would like to personally thank Anatomage for their help providing the licenses to use the their software Invivo 5 for training of the course; the medical school IT team for providing and setting up the lab with software.

Kodak offers their 3D dental imaging software to Marcilan users!

In all fairness, we didn’t see this coming. Previously we had reported about the unavailability of Kodak Dental Imaging Software 3D (a.k.a. KDIS 3D) if you are not an owner of a Kodak CBCT system. But Kodak called us to let us know that they want Marcilan users to be able to download and use their 3D software. This is a great news for everyone!

Ready to Develop iPhone and iPad apps? Need help ??

Mobile apps are getting ground with the iPhone, iPad, and Android platforms. Clinicians and dental students are using these devices on daily basis yet there is very few mobile apps for  dental electronic patient record. People are impressed when they see your app on their hand-held devices. In my field of work, I see many practitioners asking for such apps when I talk to them.

The apps were designed with the iPad in mind. All the images used are large resolution and in high quality. This is true for the iCBCT Anatomy and the iPanoramic apps.


Actually, you will have a better user experience running the apps on the iPad compared with the iPhone due to the larger screen size. All you need to do is buy the app once and it will run on any iDevice you own. Just don’t forget to hit thr 2X button ! Enjoy the apps and Happy Holiday!

Ever wondered or wanted to know how MARCILAN was created and came into existent? The book goes over how the project started and the different development stages involved. All the work that was put together to bring you this friendly, interactive, and engaging website. The book also discusses Cone Beam CT and where we are heading with education and technology.


It is basically two years of  hard yet exciting work as a master thesis project at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. The book is written in an easy to understand language and explains all the technical information if you’re interested in web based learning.

Google body browser brings anatomy to the web and is now in Google beta labs

Google body browser

The guys at Google have been working on a project to make the human body available in 3D on the web. Google body browser is still in Google beta labs and has some cool features.


You need a browser that supports WebGL. So you should be fine if you are running latest version of Firefox 4, Chrome 9 beta, or Safari. The search feature works like a charm and you probably can tell why. Check the video for yourself for a brief glimpse of features. Continue reading
